The Art of Seeing People

Avis Andres (1928-2020) was a portrait painter whose quiet, elegant style captured the emotional depth of her subjects. Trained at the Cleveland Institute of Art, she remained committed to portraiture despite its challenges, building a successful freelance career across Northeast Ohio. Working in natural light, she brought her sitters to life with delicate layers of oil paint
and a deep sensitivity to expression. Avis lived and worked in Hudson for most of her life, becoming a central figure in the local arts community. Her legacy lives on in the hundreds of portraits she created —each one a reflection of her skill, patience, and perceptive eye.
